Memory & Its Workings

Synthesis

The whole pre-reading on one page

Six branches, one core idea. Use this as a shared screen during the session — every branch maps back to a slide in the pre-reading deck.

1 · Myths & Reality

  • Memory is not a video recorder — it is reconstructive
  • Memory ≠ rote facts; memory and understanding are intertwined
  • You need memory to understand, understanding to remember
  • Memory is counterintuitive → experience alone isn't enough

2 · Two Stores

  • Working memory: seconds · 4–7 items · prefrontal cortex
  • Long-term memory: hours → years · unconscious until retrieved
  • Declarative (facts) vs. Procedural (skills)
  • H.M.: no hippocampus → no new facts, but new motor skills still learned

3 · Making a Memory

  • Encoding — filtered by attention, emotion, relevance; hippocampus binds the trace
  • Consolidation — hippocampus → neocortex, mainly during sleep
  • Retrieval — reactivating strengthens the pathway
  • "Neurons that fire together, wire together" (Hebbian)
  • ~86 billion neurons · ~150 trillion synapses

How We Learn

4 · Forgetting

  • Ebbinghaus: steep drop in hours and days, then levels off
  • Accelerators: interference, missing cues, stress, sleep loss
  • Antidote: spaced repetition at growing intervals
  • Review works best once forgetting has begun

5 · Desirable Difficulties

  • Bjork & Bjork (2011): harder now, better later
  • Retrieval practice beats rereading
  • Interleaving — mix topics and problem types
  • Context variation — change room, task, groupings
  • Deep processing — link to prior knowledge, build meaning
  • Underused precisely because they feel worse

6 · In Practice

  • Learners: self-test · offload to free working memory · protect 7–9h sleep · space sessions
  • Teachers: link to prior knowledge · short input bursts · vary practice context · assessment as learning
  • Read critically: blog posts and app marketing ≠ research findings
